Dick was born on October 22, 1945, in Washington, D.C., to Anne Reeves and Lloyd Young, a submarine captain in the U.S. Navy. He moved from base to base throughout his childhood, following his father’s station.
While studying business at the College of William & Mary, Dick met the love of his life, Margie Gall, who would become his wife of 53 years. They went on to raise two children, Jeff and Mark.
A graduate of William & Mary Law School, Dick passed the bar exam in Virginia and New York. He took his legal knowledge into the field as an investigator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in New York and D.C. before moving to the Golden Isles in 1978 to teach at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. The teaching job was supposed to last two years, but the allure of the area–including a wharf for his long-dreamed-of sailboat–led the family to extend that stay indefinitely.
Dick was an early computer hobbyist. Beginning in the 1980s, he spent more money than his wife was comfortable with buying a VIC-20 home computer followed by an ever-accumulating collection of digital gadgets. His interests led him to pioneer interactive computer-based training programs at FLETC long before they became commonplace elsewhere. Later in his career, he traveled back and forth between St. Simons and Athens to earn a master’s degree in computer-aided design at the University of Georgia.
Dick loved musical theater, especially A Chorus Line. He and Margie attended countless theater productions in Jacksonville, New York City, and elsewhere. And he took great joy in appearing in many college plays as well as an Island Players production of Oklahoma.
In retirement, Dick liked to read and to travel with his wife. Their adventures included trips to Sydney, Moscow, Beijing, and Amsterdam. He also volunteered with the Friends of the Brunswick-Glynn County Library and served for a time as its treasurer.
Dick was a quiet man unless you got him going about computers or the latest news from the Golden Isles. He loved telling dad jokes and playing the devil’s advocate in dinner conversations about issues of the day.
He is survived by his wife, Margie, and many in her loving family; sons Mark Young of St. Simons and Jeff Young and wife Leah Young of St Paul, MN; grandsons Dag and Soren; Brother, Tom Young and wife Pat Young of Greenwich, CT; and Sister, Cindy Beart and husband Robert Beart of Pasadena, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of DIck’s life will be held at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home on Saturday, May 27 at 3 p.m.
