Robert James Gonzalez, 82, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, passed away at his residence at Magnolia Manor, Tuesday, May 8, 2012. A former resident of Ontario, Canada, he had resided on St. Simons Island since the 1970’s. A sunset memorial service will be held at 6PM Sunday at Neptune Park across from the St. Simons Pier with Reverend John Kenneally from St. Williams Catholic Church officiating.
Born July 3, 1929 in Ontario, Canada to the late Luis and Florida Gonzalez-Benitez, he was a graduate of Thorold Secondary School. Mr. Gonzalez was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving 30 years including time during the Korean Conflict. He was Chief Petty Officer before retiring. He also was a navy liaison at the American Consulates in France and Belgium and other European nations. He was a proud veteran and supporter of the Republican Party and a member of the American Legion, Navy League and VFW. When retiring from the Navy, he worked at Brunswick Junior College in Brunswick. Mr. Gonzalez was also a member of St. Williams Catholic Church on St. Simons Island. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Kosch Gonzalez, stepdaughter Bianca Fletcher, brothers Louis(Ethel), Henry(Louise), Edward, Raymond(Jeanne Anne), and sister Margaret Barnhart(Harold).
Survivors include his sisters, Louise Booker (Cliff), Alice Brona, brother, Paul (Lois). Granddaughters and families are Alana, Aaron, Bianca, and Sofia Duncan of Midway, Georgia. Briana, Teddie, Nathaniel, and Jack Ebanks of the Cayman Islands. Grandson Scot Fletcher of West Palm Beach, Florida, and many nieces and nephews in Canada and the U.S.. He will always be remembered and missed by all whose lives he touched.
Inurnment to take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Thorold, Ontario at a later date.
