

Robert Lanier Miles, 79, passed away on January 13th at his home in Brunswick, Ga under Hospice care surrounded by family. Lanier was born on April 2, 1943 in Appling County Georgia to Othello and Mittie Miles. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his brothers, Oswell Miles, Alvin Miles and his sister Annie Ruth Miles Tillman.
Survivors include his brother Kenneth Miles of Kannapolis, North Carolina, his wife of 35 years Sally Booth Miles, his daughters Morgan Miles Shealy (Drew) and Angela Dawn Shorb (Paul), grandchildren Andrew & Luke Shealy, Brien, Leah, Leslie & April Ponsell and ten great-grandchildren in addition to beloved nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Bacon County High School and attended Brewton Parker College and The University of Georgia Waycross Extension. Throughout his career he attended Georgia Banking School and LSU School of Banking. He served in the National Guard from 1964 - 1970.
Lanier began his career of 50 plus years of banking in 1963 with The First National Bank of Brunswick retiring as Executive Vice President from SunTrust Bank in 2002. After a six-month retirement, he was asked to open a branch of Southeastern Bank in Brunswick serving as Senior Vice President. He retired again in 2013 and served as a Director Emeritus with the bank until his passing. He was a mentor to many through all the years of his banking profession.
Lanier served on the Glynn County Board of Education, a director of Bank Administration Institute, was active with Brunswick Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce and a member of Brunswick Country Club for 48 years. As a member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church he served on the Diaconate. His long-time presence in Glynn County gave him the opportunity to make so very many life-time friends.
Lanier enjoyed being in the outdoors. Stemming from his youth, he was an avid gardener, hunter, and fisherman. He also loved spending time on the golf course. In all of his adventures, he surrounded himself amongst family and friends, bringing joy to each one of them.
A memorial service will be held at St. Simons Presbyterian Church on Thursday January 19th at 11:00 AM with a reception in the fellowship hall to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to St. Simons Presbyterian Church or Hospice of the Golden Isles.
