Robert Patrick Wood of Brunswick, Georgia, died of a heart attack at home on July 8, 2022. He was born in Fort Gaines, Georgia, on October 29, 1957, and graduated from Clay County High School. He went on to the University of Alabama earning two degrees in four years; a Bachelor's Degree in political science and a Master's Degree in communication. While at BAMA he was a disc jockey for the campus radio station and his love for 80's music was born. He entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard three fast-attack submarines; USS Atlanta 712, USS Baltimore 704, and USS Lapon 661. Among his many awards earned in service to his country are the following: Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Arctic SVC Ribbons, and a rare interservice Air Force Achievement Medal. Following his naval service he began a 20 year career as a licensed stockbroker for Merrill Lynch and then Synovus Securities. He married Carol Fishburne Wood in 1993 becoming the father of James Murphy, their much loved son. Their navy days had them residing in Norfolk Va., San Antonio Tx., Jacksonville, Fl., and ultimately settling in Brunswick, Ga. His service in the Navy took him to Scotland, Germany, Nova Scotia, Puerto Rico and other undisclosed locations. Predeceasing were his parents, Dr. Homer Patrick Wood and Carolyn Frances Finney Wood. He is survived by his wife, Carol Fishburne Wood, and their son, James Murphy. Mother-in-law, Sarah Fishburne; sister, Mary Wood; brothers, Walter (Suzanne) Wood, and Jim (Kathleen) Wood; sister-in-law, Vicki Jones. Robert was famous for his bear hugs as can be attested by friends and his beloved nieces and nephews; Patrick, Mandy, Brooke, Lindsey, Austin, Carolyn, Lou, Madison, Zach and Morgan, Josh, Garrett, and Ashley. Robert was every inch a BAMA fan and a member of the local Alabama Club. He had a knack for transforming wherever he lived into his personal Mayberry making fast friends out of everyone. At famed Southern Soul restaurant on St. Simons he was greeted as if he was Sheriff Andy Taylor getting his "work-day special" ahead of the crowd. His cremains will be interred at New Lowell Methodist churchyard, Fort Gaines, in the near future.
