Ruth Evans Wright

Ruth Evans Wright, 97, died Friday December 16, 2016 at Magnolia Manor on St. Simons Island. She was born in Elkmont, Alabama, on January 13, 1919, the daughter of Jesse and Claudia Evans. In addition to being a wonderful mother and grandmother, Ruth was a mentor for thousands of her students, having been a teacher for over 40 years most of which was at The Lovett School (Atlanta) and The Randolph School (Huntsville, Alabama); many of her former students remember being part of her more than 25 student group trips to Europe. She held a master’s degree from the well-known Peabody College for Teachers (now a part of Vanderbilt University); she served as an American Airline Flight Attendant during the early years of World War II (1942-1944) before returning to her beloved teaching.

Ruth was a long-time resident of Atlanta and her much loved St. Simons Island where she was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church where she served many years as a docent, and was a member of The Daughters of the King. She was an avid reader and many remember her as a member of a number of book clubs on the Island.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Luther (“Lew”) E. Wright and her daughter, Beverly Wright Nemanic, her parents Jesse and Claudia Evans, and her brothers, Joseph T. Evans and Jesse P. Evans, Jr.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Joy Wright of St. Simons Island, GA, her brother, Jimmy Evans (Eve) of Charleston, SC, sister-in-law, Barbara Evans of Elkmont, AL; her four grandchildren: Melissa Roberts of Atlanta, Hunter Wright of Birmingham, Evan Clark of McLean, VA, and Jennifer Wolfe (Mike) of Brunswick, GA; three great-grandchildren: Cameron, Kylie, and Brandon of Brunswick, GA. Her nieces: Susan Evans of Elkmont, AL, Betty Lee Smith of Newport News, VA; her nephews: Jesse P. Evans III (Dawn) of Birmingham, Clayton Evans (Debbie) of Elkmont, AL, Boyd Evans of Ardmore, AL, Russell Wright of Newport News, VA, and their beloved families.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Christ Church Frederica with Rev. Becky Rowell officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Christ Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is serving the Wright family.
