Sara Jane McDowell Fryar

Sara was born on January 22, 1941 to the late Frank and Thelma McDowell, both of Brunswick, Georgia. The middle child of sixteen children, Sara was reared in a one room house and was regarded by her younger siblings as a mother figure. She was a lifelong resident of Brunswick. Sara met and married her husband Cornelius Francis "Skip" Fryar of Ravena, NY in 1962. She spent the following fifty-five years happily married to her best friend. Sara was a stay at home mother of five children who enjoyed time at the beach and dancing in her kitchen. A strong willed woman, she not only beat breast cancer but also pancreatic cancer later in her life. She was a very devout Catholic and a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Sara is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Alexander and Thelma Lee McDowell; three sisters, Frankie V. Bennett, Lana L. Taylor, and Peggy McDowell; her two brothers, Robert E. McDowell and Ronald L. McDowell. Sara is survived by her husband, Skip Fryar; her three sons, Anthony Fryar (Serena), Michael Fryar (Diane), and Eric Fryar (Wendla); her two daughters, Kimberly Warner (Vernon) and Karen Poythress (Brian); her seven wonderful grandchildren, Bridget Browning, Christopher Fryar, Alexander Fryar, Austin Fryar, Kirstie Dinkins, Nicolas Fryar, and Miles Fryar; and her three precious great grandchildren, Taylor Knight, Cornelius Talbert, and Christopher Talbert. She is also survived by her brothers, Frank E. McDowell, Shelton L. McDowell, Ben A. McDowell, and David McDowell; also her sisters, Margaret E. Gayton, Dianne F. Waggoner, Marcia E. McDowell, and Kathy J. McDowell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Sara was a wonderful, loving, funny, strong and compassionate woman who will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and took pride in her rose garden. Sara also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family will have many fond memories to cherish for years to come.

The family will receive friends between 3:00 – 4:00 PM Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. You are cordially invited to attend the Celebration of Life Service at 4:00 PM Wednesday, July 5, 2017 in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with a reception to follow the service. Deacon Larry Guyer will officiate the service.
