Sibyl Thompson Matthews passed away early Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at her Magnolia Manor Villa on St. Simons Island. She was born December 17, 1919, in the Kemp community in Emanuel County, Georgia, the daughter of George Angus and Grace Christian Thompson. She moved to St. Simons from Maryland in 2008. She will be much missed as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, and bridge player.
Sibyl, known as Sibby, graduated from Swainsboro High School, completed a business course, and went to work as a secretary for a large produce firm in Belle Glade, Florida. There she met her future husband, Warren Douglas Matthews whom she married on May 25, 1941, in Emanuel County. They spend their married days moving between homes in south Florida and the Eastern Shore of Maryland due to Doug’s employment with the produce industry.
Sibby was a warm and caring person who loved travel, cooking, entertaining, bridge, reading, politics and her church. She enjoyed contact with family members and was proud of her ancestor Reubin Thompson, R.S., as well as her grandfather Robert Bird Thompson who was a sharpshooter with the 48th GA Infantry, CSA. She was a member of St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church in Pocomoke City, Maryland, formerly a member of the altar guild, and attended St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Brunswick.
Her survivors are a daughter, Marilyn M. Lear (Robert) of Brunswick, a son Frank D. Matthews (Lynn) of Sedona, AZ, and six grandchildren, Matthew Moreira, Elizabeth M. Duncan (Vincent), Kristin Matthews, all of Denver, Britt Matthews of Las Vegas, Jordan Matthews of Sedona and Christopher Moreira (Cassandra) of Dunwoody. She also had five great grandchildren, including a special namesake Sibyl Grace Duncan, a sister Peggy Maynor, Jacksonville, and ten nieces and nephews. Her much loved husband Doug preceded her in death.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, June 11, at 3:00 at St. Mark’s Church, Brunswick, with the Rev. Alan Akridge officiating, and another service in Maryland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in her name to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church or the Samaritan Shelter in Pocomoke City, Maryland, or to a charity of one’s choosing.
