Sylvia attended Campbell High School in Fairburn, Georgia prior to the family moving to Jekyll Island in 1957. She transferred to Glynn Academy in her senior year and graduated later the summer of 1957. She then attended Perry Business School and worked at the Jekyll Island mini golf course. Upon graduation, she worked for Georgia Power until she married and started a family. As the wife of a military man, the family moved frequently but Sylvia would later return with her family to the Golden Isles. She worked as a secretary for the Coastal Georgia Area Head Start program for 30 years prior to retirement. In her spare time, Sylvia enjoyed sewing, cooking and crafting, but took great joy in painting and doing charcoal sketches.
Her parents, Luther and Isabelle Winslett, preceded her in death.
Sylvia is survived by three children, Barbara Marie Maxwell McLendon, Janet Maxwell Miller and Steven Edward Maxwell; three siblings, John Winslett, Mark Winslett and Laurie Fowler; two grandchildren, Tyler Miller (Reagan) and Austin Miller (Alex) and three great-grandchildren, Rhett, Waylon and Weston Miller.
Visitation will be held Tuesday morning, October 22, 2024 from 10:00 to 11:00 am followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Homeward Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bryce Fowler, Steve Maxwell, Austin Miller, Tyler Miller, Happy Winslett and James Winslett.
