

Thomas Lamar Owens, Sr., 91, of Shellman Bluff passed away Monday the 16th of June 2014 at Southeast Georgia Health System. A funeral service will be held 3 PM Friday, the 20th of June 2014 at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church with Reverend Bob Briley and Reverend Andy Hayman officiating. Interment will follow the service at McIntosh Family Cemetery with Masonic Rites and military honors. . Serving pallbearers will be Thad Owens, Timothy Howard, Stephen Darieng , Kevin Green, Jason Howard, Matthew Green, and D.L. McIntosh
Family will receive friends Friday, the 20th of June 2014 from 2 PM – 3 PM at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church.
Mr. Owens was born the 14th of September 1922 in Cross South Carolina to the late Thomas Lamar Owens and the late Dora Singletary Owens. He had been a resident of Shellman Bluff since January 1948.
Mr. Owens retired from civil service in Fort Stewart, GA at the age of 48. After retirement he worked and lived on St. Catharine’s Island for several years. Mr. Owens served on the McIntosh Board of Assessor’s for 12 years and the Board of Directors of Coastal Electric Membership Corp for 23 years.
Mr. Owens is a veteran of the United States Navy serving during WW II. He had been a member of the Masonic Live Oak Lodge # 137 for 50 years. He is a member of Shellman Bluff Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon since 1957. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and song leader for the Shellman Baptist Church. Mr. Owens loved the Lord and his family. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, bluegrass music, and the Atlanta Braves.
In addition to Mr. Owens parents he is preceded in death by a sister Connie O. Proctor, three brothers Louis, Marvin, and Billy Owens.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years Mirriam McIntosh Owens of Shellman Bluff, GA; a son Thomas Lamar Owens, Jr. and wife Laura of Jesup, GA; a daughter Linda Howard of Shellman Bluff, GA; five grandchildren Rita Howard Dearing (Stephen) of Savannah, GA, Jennifer Owens Green (Kevin) of Charlotte, NC. , Dr. Jody Lamar Owens (Stephanie) of Knoxville, TN, Thad Owens ( Andrea) of Lakeland, FL, and Timothy Howard (Donna) of Shellman Bluff, GA; nine great- grandchildren Marysa, Stephanie, Grace, Jason, and Brady Howard all of Shellman Bluff, GA, Matthew Green of Charlotte, NC, Sydney and Mason Owens of Lakeland, FL, and Abigail Owens of Knoxville, TN; a sister Trudie Owens Baker of Spartanburg, SC, two brothers David Owens ( Nattie -Lee) of Summerville, SC, and Gerald Owens ( Nadine) of Denver CO; and numerous nieces, nephews, and a family friend Karen Burns.
