Wilkes was born to parents Tollie and Fronie McSwain Latham. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II. After discharge, he returned to Brunswick to work as a butcher for the families business, Southland Market, where he worked alongside his brother, Joe, for over 50 years.
In addition to his parents, a daughter, Michelle Latham; two brothers, Joe and Otto Latham; two sisters, Myrtle Blackburn and Gracie Winn and a daughter in law, Mary Davis Latham preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Claraphine Cason Latham; three sons, Thomas E. Latham, Matthew Landon (Karon Clevenger Landon) and Edwin Landon; three daughters, Cynthia Barnett (Jerry), Deanna Latham (Diane Hassell) and Linda Taylor (Scott); eight grandchildren, Brian Latham, Brad Marat, Christina Bridges, Shadrick Sailors, Kimberly Lofquist, Jeffery Barnett, Justin Landon and Shayne Taylor; ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 11, 2024 from 10:00 to 11:30 am at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A private graveside service with military honors will follow in Palmetto East. Active pallbearers will be Brian Latham, Brad Marat, Jeffery Barnett, Shadrick Sailors, Austin Johnson and Dayen Marat. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Barnett, Scott Taylor and Shane Taylor.
