William Anderson Dunlap

Predeceased by his parents, Mary McCarty Dunlap and Edgar Fain Dunlap and an older brother, Edgar Dunlap, Jr., Bill is survived by his wife, Sandra Cheves Dunlap; stepdaughter, Tracie Dawn Alvis; brother, John Kennedy Dunlap; and nephew, John Miller Dunlap, all of Atlanta.

He was born July 24, 1933 and was the fourth generation Atlantan on both sides of his family. He grew up in Brookwood Hills and attended East River Grammar School, North River High School and graduated from Darlington Prep School in Rome, Georgia.

Bill taught dancing and swimming in order to finance his education at Georgia Tech where he majored in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Industrial Management. At Georgia Tech, he played varsity basketball; was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity where he served as president; elected to the ANAK Honorary Society; and was a member of Who's Who of American Colleges and Universities. He was also one of the original Buckhead Boys of Atlanta.

After joining the Army Reserve Unit, Bill served in the chemical and biological warfare laboratories at Ft. Detrick, Maryland where he served as an air control engineer for two years. He earned an MBA majoring in Finance and Marketing at Emory University and attended Woodrow Wilson College of Law majoring in corporate law.

Bill joined Georgia Power for a number of years and transferred to the parent company, Southern Company. There he was a senior executive in charge of marketing, rates and public affairs for the system and retired after serving 25 years in a Senior Vice President position.

Long time member of North Avenue Presbyterian Church in Atlanta which his grandmother helped found, he was also a member of Wesley Church at Frederica on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

He served as president of the Atlanta Association of SAE, president of Atlanta Black Tie club, president of the Nine O’clock and served on the board for 20 years as president and finance chairman for Cross Creek Condo Association. He was also a member of Atlanta Rotary.

As a private investor, he enjoyed dancing, tennis, snow and water skiing, white water canoeing and gardening. He especially loved his Lake Burton home which he helped build 50 years ago.

Representing Georgia Power, he helped with the movie, Deliverance and was proud of an official Old Town wood ribbed canoe used in the movie which was presented to him.

Bill was a true southern gentleman who will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 on Friday, July 31 at Wesley Church at Frederica. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wesley Church at Frederica, Hospice of the Golden Isles or English Springer Rescue Association (ESRA).
