

William Hyde Parker Shiver, 78, of Brunswick, died at Hospice of the Golden Isles on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Mr. Shiver was born in Brunswick on January 2, 1934 to Robert Talmadge and Madeline Davis Shiver. He graduated from Glynn Academy in 1952, and attended Georgia Military Academy, where he enjoyed many happy days as an outstanding football player and athlete. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
Mr. Shiver joined the United States Marine Corps in 1953, completing his basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. In 1956, he completed his initial enlistment and was assigned to the United States Naval Reserve Construction Battalion, known as the SEABEES. He served as a devoted SEABEE for 38 years, and retired as Chief Warrant Officer-4. He maintained membership in the Marine Corps League, and held various offices in the local chapter. He enjoyed great camaraderie with his Marine Corps brothers.
Parker was a second generation construction engineer with a passion for his craft. He retired from Hercules, Inc. after 25 years of service as superintendent of industrial support. He continued his work with the Saudi Arabian National Guard as superintendent of construction support in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 1980-1988. Additionally, Mr. Shiver was known in the area as a builder of custom homes. Shiver was a member of the U. S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps, the Society of American Military Engineers, the Reserve Officers Association of the United States, Masonic Ocean Lodge 214 F&A M, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Sons of the American Revolution, and Sons of the Confederacy.
Mr. Shiver is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Laura; and two daughters, Dr. Susan Shiver Barrow and husband Dr. Jody Barrow, of Waycross; and Dr. Cindy Shiver Jacobs, and husband Russell C. Jacobs, III, of St. Simons Island. He had seven grandchildren: Ashley Akers, Michael Akers, Christian Akers, Blythe Barrow, Joseph Barrow, Jr., Madeline Jacobs, Parker Jacobs, and devoted nephew Marc Morris, and nieces. He was preceded in death by sisters Talma Shiver Evans, and Ann Shiver Morris.
Services for Mr. Shiver are scheduled for Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at 11:00, at the Chapel of Edo Miller Funeral Home with the family receiving friends one hour before the service. A graveside service with military and Masonic honors will follow at Palmetto Cemetery.
