LaVerne was born in Brunswick, GA on March 30, 1931, the son of Raymond LaVerne Strickland and Mildred Hope Strickland.
He graduated from Glynn Academy in 1949. After graduation, he joined the Navy, where he served 3 years and 10 months. While in the service, he visited relatives in Washington, GA, where he met LaVera Smith, the love of his life and were married for 71 years. After his time in the Navy, he went to work for Hercules, where he retired in 1991.
LaVerne was an active member of First Baptist Church until his health prevented him from serving. He was a deacon and served on several committees and was also a volunteer at Manna House for many years. LaVerne was an avid reader, coin collector, and Mason. He enjoyed building things and loved camping in the mountains. When watching the Braves and Dawgs play, he provided a nice, warm lap for Sassy and Bumper, his beloved cats.
LaVerne is survived by his wife, LaVera; daughter, Renee’ Williams; two grandchildren, Daniel Tuten (Jill) and Diana Wright; one great-grandchild, Audrey Leighton Tuten; sister-in-law, Gracia Smith of Washington, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church of Brunswick on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 2pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 3pm in the Sanctuary.
