Williefen “Betty” McConnell of Brunswick, Georgia entered peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 2, 2022, at the age of 92. She is now strolling over heaven with her late husband, David McConnell Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Talmadge Joyner Sr. and Maggie Yarbrough Joyner; Sisters, Margaret Blount and Lily Mae Clay; and brothers, William Elliot Joyner, Buster, Pete, and Sonny Joyner.
Betty (as she was affectionately known) was born in Jesup, Georgia, but resided on St. Simons Island and in Brunswick most of her life. A 1947 graduate of Glynn Academy, she was an active member of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild. Betty retired from the GA Department of Family & Children’s Services. In earlier years, she managed and taught the Pre-K program at St. David’s Episcopal Church, then worked as an aide with the public school system.
Betty was very active in her children’s activities and shared her love of reading and libraries with them. She loved entertaining family and friends and cooking for them during the holidays. Her hobbies included sewing, embroidering, decorating, and thrift store shopping. Later in life, Betty enjoyed traveling with friends and her weekly dominoes group. She took great pride in her yard’s appearance and loved tending to her flowers and plants. Christmas was her favorite time of year and she was a prolific giver of gifts. Her feisty spirit lit up any room she was in, and she lived life on her own terms. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memories are three daughters, Deborah Houck (Phillip), Cynthia Lybarger (Jim), and Davelyn Rodgers (Brian); One grandchild, Alisia Houck; Four sisters, Doris Hanson, Vivian DeCurtis, Thelma Parrish, and Ann Ehrlich; and one brother, Elmer Eugene Joyner. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Betty is resting beside her late husband David at Palmetto Cemetery in Brunswick. A Service to honor Betty's life will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A catered reception will be provided.
