Born Wray Albert on August 2, 1935, in Marienville, PA, he began using his childhood nickname, Joe, once his 1st grandchild was born and has been called Joe for the past 30 yrs. Joe was the son of the late Wray Albert Songer and the late Bernice Taylor Songer. In 1958, Joe married the love of his life the late Patricia Songer (married for 60 years) and then graduated in 1960 from the University of Akron majoring in mechanical engineering. After graduation he fulfilled his military duty at the Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana. Joe then began to work for Firestone and spent the majority of his life moving around the country to be Chief Engineer at various Firestone plants. Joe followed his son into Boy Scouts where he became and avid scout leader who passed on his woodworking and engineering skills to the scouts. Finally in 2002, Nanny and Joe settled down in St. Simons Island, GA where Joe became an active member of the Brunswick Kiwanis Club. Joe filled almost every position possible including president, Vidalia Onion chair, Stewbilee chair and Christmas Tree worker extraordinaire. Beginning in 1998, his favorite pastime was taking his family of 10 to Walt Disney World every 2 years. Since that time he was always seen wearing a Mickey Mouse shirt.
Left to cherish Joe’s memories are his daughter, Lori Fiveash (David); his son, Neil Songer (Hong); and four grandchildren, Caroline Fiveash Smith (Taylor), Cole Fiveash (Charlotte), Daniel Songer and Whitney Songer.
The family will hold a private celebration of Joe’s life at a later date. The service will be a tribute to a life well lived.
Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. His family will have many fond memories to cherish for years to come.
