Al is also survived by Hazel’s mother Doris Skidmore (UK) and Hazel’s sister Barbara (Gordon) Ford (USA). Al was predeceased by his parents Helen and Henry, his first wife Pauline, his brother Harold, and his brother-in-law Lorne.
Al was born in Steinbach, MB but raised in Brooks, AB. Al received his Barber’s license in 1956 and worked at several barber shops in Alberta and BC before he was able to realize his goal to open his own shop “Haysboro Barber Shop”, which he worked at for many years. Al had many loyal customers who became life-long friends. In 1999, Al sold the shop and he and Hazel moved to Vernon, BC.
Al and his late wife Pauline were very involved in the Acadia Community and volunteered many hours of their time. They were also instrumental in the fundraising and development of the Acadia Recreation Centre. Al was a natural musician, having never taken a music lesson; he could pick up almost any instrument and begin playing, from guitar, violin, accordion and piano. He took up skiing at the age of forty-two and it became a passion that he loved to share with his boys and family members. Al and Hazel returned to Calgary in 2007, moving to Airdrie in 2009.
A Celebration of Al’s life will take place in the spring of 2011 to accommodate as many family and friends as possible. If you would like to be personally advised of the Celebration date, please let the funeral home know and they will ensure you are advised.
