A life well lived ended peacefully for Al on Saturday, June 15, 2013 in Calgary, AB. in the comfort of his home. Al was born on August 13, 1929 in Koszeg Remete, Hungary to Cecilia and Vincent Dohi. At the age of seven, he immigrated to Canada with his mother and brother, Gabe, on the Empress of Australia to join his father who had immigrated years earlier and settled in the Picture Butte area of Alberta. Years later, the family moved to Calgary where Al attended Crescent Heights High School. He met and married the love of his life, Irene, in 1953. During their 55 years of marriage, Al was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. At the age of 17, he started working for Otis Elevator Company as a mechanic’s helper, advancing to mechanic, foreman and then adjuster. In 1965, Al opened and managed the Calgary office for Western Elevator until his retirement. Al and Irene travelled the world together, but their favourite destination was Las Vegas. They were members of the Hi-Land Swingers Square Dance group. A highlight of their life together was their participation at the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games. Al will be lovingly remembered by his three children, Barbara, Kathleen and Michael (Alice); four grandchildren, David (Melissa), Jennifer (Geoff), Nicholas and Joshua; and three great grandchildren, Shea, Brody and Drake. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the care and compassion of Dr. Mustata and his team at the Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic as well as Dr. Falk and his Palliative Home Care Team. With their support, Al was able to spend the last years of his life in the comfort of his home. A family gathering was held to celebrate Al’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, 6007 1A Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 0G5. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
