He will be remembered with love by his wife Christine (nee Bacon), sons Phillip (Amy) and Justin (Rachel), three grandsons (Peter, Lincoln and Martin), by his mother Odile and brother Pierrick, as well as extended family and his many friends.
Alex was born in St. Paul, Alberta on September 24, 1955 to Alain and Odile du Plessix who emigrated from France earlier that year. He grew up in Red Rock, Northwestern Ontario where he went to high school, and learned to ride a motorcycle before he could drive a car!
While pursuing a degree in Economics from Lakehead University, he met Christine. After graduating, and with funds earned working at the paper mill, Alex explored Europe for a year, long before EuroRail passes and train schedules were available on the internet. Upon his return, he reconnected with Christine as he began a 35 year career with Bank of Montreal. Together they moved from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg, to St. Claude, back to Winnipeg, onto Saskatoon, then finally Calgary. While working at BMO Alex earned his CFP designation preparing him to work with customers securing loans, mortgages and investments. He loved that his role provided him the opportunity to build relationships with people as he helped them achieve their financial goals.
Alex cherished his family and was so proud of his boys. He put family first, chauffeuring the boys to their various activities and supporting the household as the family worked through their various academic endeavours. Alex was the constant observer, looking for ways to create ease and support people as he ventured through life. He was affectionately 'the butler' putting others first, always in service with a smile and considerate gesture... a true gentle man.
Of his favourite adventures, Alex treasured those with his family, especially ski trips, exploring Europe, and summers at camp on Silver Beach and Loon Lake. His favourite solo hobby was to scour AutoTrader, Kijiji and car lots for deals on his next vehicle.
Shortly after moving to Calgary, Alex began to explore the mountains. During the summers and shoulder seasons he hiked the glorious trails of Kananaskis, Banff and Waterton National Parks. During the winters he skied at Lake Louise and Sunshine Village, eventually enrolling as a volunteer with Ski Friends at Lake Louise. He loved this opportunity to meet people and build friendships, so much so that he continued to serve with the Ski Friends even after his cancer treatment meant that he could no longer ski.
Special thanks to Dr. Don Morris and his team at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. And we will be forever grateful to the very special people at Agape Hospice for their compassionate care; brightening our days, anticipating Alex’s needs and guiding him in his most vulnerable moments.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at Commons Church, 2404 Kensington Road NW, Calgary, Alberta.
If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army Agape Hospice at http://agapehospice.ca or by calling 403-282-6582.
