SPARK, Anita Doreen (nee Turner) June 22, 1929-November 13, 2012

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Doreen Spark in Calgary, AB on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the age of 83 years. Doreen was born in Calgary, the only child of Ted and Thora Turner. Upon graduating from Crescent Heights High School, Doreen enrolled in the University of Alberta and received her teaching certificate. Doreen returned to university in her late forties and received her Bachelor of Education degree. She taught kindergarten and pre-school for many years and kept the mementos and gifts from the children as a reminder of her happy times as a teacher. A proud second-generation Calgarian, Doreen was for many years a committed member of Rosedale/Wildrose United Church and an active volunteer at Fort Calgary. She enjoyed curling, speed skating and the occasional game of golf. Mom loved to play cards, including bridge, cribbage and stop-the-bus, and in her younger days enjoyed dancing. Sunday dinners were an important part of her life, starting when her children were young and continuing throughout her life to include her rapidly expanding family. Doreen was predeceased by her husband William Spark and is survived by her sons Kim (Kathy), Jay (Beth) and her daughters Linda McDonald (Dave) and Tricia Carter (Cliff). She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Katy, Alana, Tom, Joel, Amy, Meaghan, Andrew, Nik, Liam, Logan and Ben, as well as her beloved dog Louie. Doreen was a supportive, loving and generous Mom and Nana, and will be missed by all who loved her. A celebration of her life will take place at Wildrose United Church, 1317 1 Street NW, Calgary on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 2:00 pm. The service will be followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Calgary SPCA, 4455 - 110 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2C 2T7 would be a fitting tribute to Doreen. The family would like to thank all the staff at Symphony Seniors Living Evergreen for their care, love and compassion. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website

Mrs. Spark was a wonderful kindergarten teacher at Capt. John Palliser School.
My son, Ian, who was a "different" child, later diagnosed with Asperger's, loved her as did all the other kids. She was great with them.
If only we could have more teachers like her.

Our sympathy to all the family.

I was so sorry to hear of Doreen,s death. I have many happy memories of Doreen particularly when we both lived on Kerfoot cr. We went curling together but it was really the Flames and the hockey games that we went to that made our friendship so special. I will miss her.
