Anne Dorothy Adams, beloved mother of Richard, Dan, Stewart, and Edward passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the age of 93 in Calgary, Alberta. Born on October 24th, 1930 in Guerneyville, Alberta, she was the only daughter of five children. The family stayed in Guerneyville until 1935 when the family moved to St. Paul, Alberta to farm during the war. After the loss of their mother the family then moved to Lamont, Alberta in 1942. Upon graduating from Lamont High School, Mom went to Calgary, Alberta where she was employed by Western Leaseholds Limited. This is where Anne met Mervyn Adams, an up-and-coming chartered accountant, with the Company. A variety of dates turned into romance and they were married in 1956.
With romance comes children, Richard, Dan and Stewart joined the family over a four-year period from 1959 to 1963. Anne was a doting mother and in with her giving nature she often sent the kids to school with her hand cut hair stylings and hand me down shirts and pants. Family pictures indicated that Mustard yellow had to be the in-fashion color of the day or the color most on sale at the store. Whether feeding random children in her kitchen, or sitting on the front step with Merv watching the action in the park, her love for us and motherhood was boundless.
Her best surprise came in 1970 with the sudden arrival of the fourth son Edward, the other brothers were the most surprised. Shortly, after the arrival of Ed, the boys started playing sports and Mervyn and Anne continued their parent of the year ways, not missing a football, basketball, rugby or volleyball game. This continued until Ed’s graduation in 1988. Anne and Merv reupholstered Ed’s car dashboard with a mustard corduroy and even repainted the boy’s cars with leftover lawn furniture paint without their permission. They were givers.
Early in 1988, Mervyn passed away, leaving Anne the tools and the skills to take on the world.
After Mervyn’s passing Anne joined her brother George on junkets with the Canadian Association of the World Petroleum Congress. George’s passion for the WPC became Anne’s ticket to travel to London, Houston, Buenos Aires, Stavanger Norway, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg.
Anne continued to find time for family with the arrival of grandchildren starting with Danielle, Alyssa, Tea and Paige. Anne supported and attended their plays, their sports, their dance recitals with absolute joy. Anne continued her relationship with her brothers George, Don, Harry and Jimmy and their families. When Anne was not tending to family matters and travelling the world she was in her garden and greenhouse growing lush vegetables, helping manage the family oil well (just the one), enjoying her neighbors, church and many friends.
As her sons played a number of sports, Anne enjoyed most sporting events and she was a long time season ticket holder of the Calgary Stampeders and an avid fan of the Calgary Flames. She loved golfing, and was able to play well into her eighties. Anne will be remembered for her gentle spirit, strength and dedication, gardening skills, ability to make friends with all and her smile.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children Richard, Dan (Elaine Arthur), Stewart (Barb), Edward; her granddaughters Danielle (Nathaniel) and Alyssa, Tea and Paige, first great grandson Liam, her brother Donald of Vernon, sister in law Dorothy and her beloved relatives overseas.
Anne was predeceased by her husband, Mervyn, brothers George Warne, Harry Warne, Jimmy Warne, mother Susannah Warne and father Frederick Warne, and her stepmother Elsie Warne, father in law W. James Adams, mother in law Lottie Adams and daughter in law June (nee Crawford).
Special thanks to brother Ed, friend Suzanne Stalder (and husband Grant), Dr. Krause, Brian (nurse), Dr. Filyk for the care and attention paid to Anne. Special recognition to caregiver Carla who became a great friend and crucial to Anne’s care. Friend and caregiver Deb was also a loving and positive force during the past year.
Thank you to all of her caregivers, and to the many nurses and folks that gave mom so much care over the last few years.
A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 1009 15 Ave SW, Calgary, AB on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.
