Netty is survived by her children Melissa (Bruce) Symons, Monica Vandermeer (Greg Goudy), David (Marnie) Vandermeer, and Bernie Vandermeer; along with her grandchildren Amanda, Johnny, Sarah and Jacob. She also leaves behind her sisters Corrie, Lize and Riet.
Netty was born in Scheveningen, Netherlands, but she immigrated to Canada when she was only 21 to start a new life with her husband Bernard “Ben”. They initially landed in Winnipeg, where Ben completed a master’s degree in social work before they moved to Calgary where they had 4 kids together.
Netty was always devout, even as a child, and was called to help the needy. She had been active in ministry to the homeless and less fortunate for the past 30 years. At 86 years old, she was still feeding and ministering to the homeless in -40°C weather. She was a true gem of a soul, and demonstrated selflessness and kindness to all those around her.
Her family would like to thank the dozens of people who rallied at her bedside when she was ill. It was a true testament to the people whom she touched during her life.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday October 27, at 1:00 p.m. at Southside Victory Church
