He was born August 3, 1926 in Scotstown, Quebec, the youngest child of Donald Murdo McLeod and Euphina (Ina) Mary Matheson. Art grew up in the Eastern Townships of Quebec and moved west after the war. He worked in a variety of jobs, and married Olive Snyder of Calgary in March 1955. The couple moved to Ontario, and settled in Cornwall, where Art found work driving a bulldozer and other machinery. He helped to construct the massive St. Lawrence Seaway project. In 1961, Art and his young family moved back to Calgary, where they settled for good. Art worked as a long distance truck driver. He earned his master mechanic’s ticket and worked for Burns and Dutton and CANA Construction for years before retiring. Art was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955 for more than fifty years. He was athletic, and enjoyed playing all sorts of sports in his youth: hockey, baseball, football, golf, and curling. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, he was an active member of both the Renfrew Community Association and the Winston Heights-Mountainview Community Association, and coached pee-wee hockey. In later years, up to his final illness, he was active in the West Hillhurst Go-getters 50+ and the Royal Canadian Legion North Calgary Branch No. 264. Art liked nothing better than puttering around the family cottage at Chestermere Lake, fixing things. Art McLeod was predeceased by his parents and all nine of his siblings. He is survived by Olive, his loving wife of fifty-nine years; son, Don of Toronto, and daughter, Joanne of Calgary. Art was a good husband, father, and friend, and will be missed by all who knew him. The family would like to express their thankfulness to Vanessa and Lorraine and all the staff at Chinook Care Centre, where he resided for the past four years. We also would like to thank emergency staff at both the Rockyview Hospital and the South Calgary Health Centre for doing everything possible in the past few months.
A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Suite 100-119 14 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
