Betty was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on December 24, 1925 to Harry and Ruth (Kerr) Bissell. After high school, Betty worked at the TB sanatorium at Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan and then at the Swift Current Sun newspaper. Betty married Stanley Edward Dyer on June 19, 1948 in a double wedding ceremony with her brother Kerry and his wife Olly. Stan and Betty had three children; Leslie, Michael, and Kerry, all born in Swift Current. The family lived in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Stettler, Alberta, Estevan, Saskatchewan, and finally moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1970. Each move occurred when Stan was promoted to a new position in the Post Office. Betty was a stay at home mom, always encouraging her children and then the grandchildren in their many activities. Betty worked for a time doing inventory work for the Calgary Board of Education. She participated in church communities and IODE in the cities where she lived. Betty enjoyed the arts, liked singing, was a painter, knitter and could make any Hallowe’en costume or birthday cake that her grandchildren could dream up.
Betty loved her house in the Queensland community where she lived with Stan, until his passing in 2000, from 1974-2021. She treasured her guardian angel neighbours Richard and Judy, Char and Rick, and Sally and Dion. She enjoyed puttering in the yard, socializing with friends and family, especially at Christmas, vacations with family, recognizing birthdays of everyone in her birthday book, going out for Sunday dinners, and watching sports, especially hockey and tennis, on television.
Betty and Stan took great pleasure in taking their extended family to Disneyland, Disneyworld, Hawaii, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Mexico, a gift of fond memories for all.
Betty is survived by her children Leslie Vass (Dan) of Kelowna, British Columbia, Michael Dyer (Ann) of Calgary, Alberta, and Kerry Dyer of Calgary, Alberta; her four grandchildren Michael Vass (GaHee Park), Laura Vass (Anthony Peterson), Robert Dyer (Andrea Kormylo), and Sam Dyer; her two great grandchildren Joshua Peterson and Elliott Peterson; her sister-in-law Tilly Dyer of Penticton, British Columbia. Betty is predeceased by her husband Stanley Edward Dyer, brother Kerry Bissell and his wife Olive Bissell, brother Donald Bissell, mother Ruth Bissell, and father Harry Bissell.
Betty will also be missed by her nieces and nephews from the Dyer and Bissell families.
We will miss her presence and the 'anchor' she provided in our lives. In her honour...read a book, listen to classical music or Anne Murray, go for a drive and enjoy nature, draw or paint a picture, engage in honest debate, cook a meal for your family or friends, donate needed money to your church, charity, friends and family....or just love and talk with your family and friends.
May her spirit soar and remain with the people she has touched.
