Christian Anderson Connon Groundwater

Christian Anderson Connon Groundwater passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family in Calgary at the age of 83 years. Chris is lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Nancy; as well as his children Ruth Smith (Brent) and Brian Groundwater (Cody). Chis is survived by his grandchildren who loved their Grandad dearly, Stacia, Jocelyn, Lucie and Elliot. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and brother Alexander Groundwater. He was predeceased by his mother Christina Groundwater; father Alexander Groundwater; and siblings Tom and Olive.

Chris was born in Longhope, Scotland in 1932. He was a Marine Engineer with the Merchant Navy of Scotland and travelled much of the world. In 1959 he married Nancy, the love of his life in Aberdeen Scotland. In 1960 they immigrated to Canada to start a new life. He worked for Home Oil in Carstairs, then took a job with Shell Canada in Pincher Creek from 1961 to 1985. In 1985, he transferred to Shell’s Calgary office and semi-retired in 1993. He continued to do Engineering consulting work for many years. Chris was at his happiest with family at their cabin on Kootenay Lake. After selling the cabin he and Nancy spent as much time as possible enjoying their boat on Vancouver Island. Chris was a mentor and a friend to many. He worked hard and enjoyed his life and family. His community involvement included volunteering on the Pincher Creek Hospital Board for new hospital construction and then in Calgary where he taught boating courses for the Canadian Power Sail Squadrons.

At Chris’ request, there will be a private family gathering to be held on Friday, January 29, 2016 at SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE, 12700 Macleod Trail South (at Lake Fraser Gate) at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made in Chris’ memory directly to a charity of your choosing.
