After facing Alzheimer’s for many years with incredible strength and courage, our amazing Mom, Doreen left us April 11, 2025, and is now reunited with her husband of 62 years, Mike, who passed on August 27, 2024. Doreen was born in Lethbridge, AB and moved to Calgary, AB to become a secretary with IBM. It was here she met Mike and began the journey of marriage in 1962, with three kids to follow, David, Wendy (Peter) and Patti (Hermann).
Doreen felt fortunate being able to stay at home to raise her children and loved every moment of participating in our activities from the time of preschool volunteering, and junior high field trips, to post-secondary education essay support and cross-country visits. Mom was always the loudest cheerleader, best scorekeeper and ever-present fan at all of our sporting events, and the taxi driver to our part time jobs and social events. She spent any spare time she had volunteering for charitable causes - her favorite being the Heart and Stroke Foundation. During this time, she became lifelong best friends with Hennie Delooze and Gloria McLeod (predeceased January 1, 2018) and they all spent countless hours having coffee at their favorite spots, sharing stories, challenges and secrets that only best friends do.
Not only did Mom cherish her family, but our friends as well. Her kind approach, gentle touch and open heart made her Mom everyone was comfortable being around. Doreen was also a proud Grandma to her 6 grandchildren Breanne (Dalton), Britton, Brandon, Keaton, Matheson and Parker and step Grandma to Lauren and she loved looking after the grandkids whenever she could, never missing a game, recital, event or special occasion until she was no longer able to attend.
Doreen and Mike loved to travel and in their younger years enjoyed taking us in the travel trailer across Canada and the USA, with Disneyland being one of Mom’s favorites. As the family grew up, many weekends were spent at their condo in Canmore, AB where Mom and Dad enjoyed golfing, dining out, and sitting on the balcony overlooking the Three Sisters. They relished their years as snowbirds spending February - April in Ventura, California golfing and appreciating the milder weather. In their later years, they enjoyed many cruises including Hawaii and the eastern seaboard from NYC to Quebec.
Although Mom herself was the ultimate caregiver – always looking after everyone else, we believe that she also looked after Dad in her own way during her long struggle with Alzheimer's, as during his own health challenges, Dad always had to get home to “Doreenie”.
Mike and Doreen were fortunate to have had the best care in their own home by our team of angels Len, Winona, Gemma, Judith, Julie and Faye. It is with our deepest gratitude and appreciation that we thank this group of incredible women for their faithful and loving dedication to our parents. A special thank you to our sister, Patti, who was at Mom’s house, by her side while she journeyed to her next life.
Doreen was predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Lillian Rudd, Stepmother Bernie and Brother Ken.
