With much love and deep sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Dorothy, on December 21st, 2020 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 103 years. She was born March 11, 1917, and spent her entire life in Calgary amongst family and her many lifelong friends. Dorothy was preceded by her husband of 52 years, William Nelson. Dorothy is survived by; her daughter Patricia (Terry) Ramsay, 2 grandchildren; Jennifer and Chance and her loving great grandchildren.
Dorothy was born in Calgary, Alberta in March 1917 to Henry and Edith. After completing school, she began work at Ontario Laundry Ltd. where she met the love of her life, William Nelson. They would marry in 1946. Dorothy finished her career with Sun Oil Company in 1982.
In 1952, she fell in love with 10 pin bowling and was known as a top bowler and fixture at local Calgary tournaments. In 1966 Dorothy and Bill started up Talents Unlimited, a 10-pin bowling league where they would coach and assist youth with developmental disabilities. Their love of fun, exercise and pure joy on the kids’ faces kept them in the game until the 1990’s. Dorothy kept her 150 bowling average right up to her mid 80’s and continued bowling until 93 years of age.
Dorothy became involved with Seniors Connect, a resource program committed to providing safety and support to seniors. She had a great fondness for the program and thoroughly enjoyed the home visits by their volunteers and appreciated all the help they provided to her.
Dorothy loved to spend time outdoors in her garden, tending to her back yard. She loved to work on puzzles to keep her mind active and clear. She will be dearly missed by all her family and life-long friends. Her feistiness and positive upbeat attitude will never be forgotten, and her stories will always be shared.
A private service will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to calgaryseniors.org or theveteransfoodbankofcalgary.ca
