After a brief illness, and surrounded by his family and friends, Doug passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.
He will be forever cherished by his beloved wife of 40 years Barb, their children Brian (Tara), Mike (Tara), and Jenn (Matthew) Hayne, his Mother Pat, his brother Stephen (Linda), and his sister Patty (Brian Avery). He is survived by Barb’s brothers Dave and Steve (Kim) Morrison and her sisters Pat Kisman and Carol Morrison-Simmonds. Doug was predeceased by his father Bruce, brother-in-law John Simmonds and sister-in-law Janice Pearson. Doug was the proud and much-loved grandfather to Kennedie, Hayden, Addison and Ethan. Doug will be lovingly remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews and extended family, and his many friends, including Kathleen Fox and his lifelong friends from Deep River, Ontario, Chris Davies and Bill Kenney.
He was part of an incredibly close-knit group of neighbors, with members of his “bathrobe mafia” Hugh, Elgin, Ian and Don meeting in the early hours of the day to chat and have a coffee together. Everyone in Doug’s vast circle of friends and family have benefited from his never-ending capacity to help build, renovate or repair virtually anything. After a successful 34-year career with Sears; spanning western Canada, Doug and Barb settled back in Calgary where Doug recently embarked on a new adventure as a licensed home inspector. Doug was a master home chef, fine woodworker, baseball coach, fisherman, golfer, wine connoisseur and an avid curler.
The family wishes to send special thanks to the Unit 46 staff and Dr. LaBrie of the Foothills Hospital and to Dr. Lemieux and her staff at the Rosedale Hospice.
