Douglas was born on December 18, 1942 in Saigon, Vietnam to his father Kim Truong and mother Cam Luong. He was the sixth child in a family of eight children. He had four brothers and three sisters. He was a very bright and talented student in the areas of mathematics, art and Chinese calligraphy. He also studied languages including: English, Chinese and Vietnamese. He was a successful business partner in his jewelry business Bao Quang, which allowed him to be the main financial provider for his entire family.
In 1968, he met his soon to be wife Susan, they had a wonderful courtship and they married on January 13, 1973. He was a devoted husband for 47 years.
His new family was growing in the midst of a civil war raging in Vietnam. By the end of the war it was clear he would have to move his family. Securing a spot on a boat was only the first step in a tumultuous journey across violent seas. The boat would eventually land in Manila, Philippines, and after a long wait they would embark upon the final leg of their journey to their new home in Canada.
Their new life would start in a modest one-bedroom apartment in the growing City of Calgary. Not long after, through Douglas' hard work and dedication as a facility manager at SAIT and the Calgary Board of Education, he quickly established a life for his young family in the fledging community of Abbeydale. Over the years he would return to his business and entrepreneurial roots with a career as an Insurance Agent with Crown Life and Canada Life. His daughter Fifi and his son Wayne flourished in the Canadian home and went on to university and both attained professional degrees. Fifi is an Investment Planner, and Wayne is a Pediatric Surgeon.
He was an active member of the Lung Kong Association (Calgary Chapter), where he voluntarily served as the English Secretary. His talent in Chinese calligraphy gave him an opportunity to also volunteer his services to several Calgary Chinese Associations.
Douglas is lovingly remembered by his wife Susan, daughter Fifi (Sean), and son Wayne (Emilie). He will be missed by his grandson Remy Douglas. He was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be sadly missed.
A private Memorial Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel. Relatives and friends are invited to join the Service via live webcast.
Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
