It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dun Sung “Danny” Quan in Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the age of 96 years. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 65 years, Flonce, and his six beloved daughters: Betty (Ed) with grandsons Harrison and Brendan; Brenda (Peter) with grandson Zachary; Leila (Burton) with granddaughters Megan and Amy; Debbie (George) with grandchildren Jordan, Caitlin, Nicholas, and Ava; Wanda (Norman) with grandchildren Evan (Kathy) and Lauren; and Cindy (Blair) with grandsons Riley and Graycen. He was predeceased by his sister, Kwie Sam Quon, and his brothers, Sanders Kwan and Donald Quon.
Danny was born on January 1, 1928, in Kaiping, Guangdong, China. At the age of 24, he immigrated to Moose Jaw, SK, and began working in the restaurant industry. Starting off as a dishwasher, he quickly worked his way up to head cook at National Cafe. Customers sought out his delicious apple and banana cream pies, which became local favorites. In 1957, Danny relocated to Calgary, AB, where he began working in the grocery industry. Two years later, in 1959, he returned to Hong Kong, where he married Flonce. Together, they began their new life in Calgary. Danny had a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and in 1964, he opened his own independent grocery store, Northmount Foods. Given his friendly and chatty nature, Danny quickly developed many friendships with customers and became an important part of the Highwood community. Together, they built and ran a successful business for 18 years, working tirelessly to provide for their growing family. Danny instilled in his children the values of hard work and the pursuit of higher education, believing that these were key to a better life.
Fitness was an important part of Danny's life; he faithfully practiced Tai Chi every morning. He also enjoyed walking with friends at the local mall, swimming, and relaxing in the hot tub. He found joy in fishing, gardening, singing karaoke, and playing mah-jong with friends—often late into the night. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and always made sure he had their favourite foods on hand for their visits. Danny was also a dedicated Calgary Stampeders fan, cheering them on with vigor and rarely missing a game.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Cambridge Manor for their dedicated care, as well as to his personal caregivers for their care, love, and support.
Visitation will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel, 3220 4 Street N.W., Calgary, on Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Foster's Garden Chapel on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., followed by interment at Queens Park Cemetery.
