1933 - 2006
Gerry passed away in the arms of his family on Tuesday, February 21, 2006, while the family was enjoying a vacation in Varadero, Cuba. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Leona; his son David and his wife Cindy; his beloved granddaughter Jessica; and his brother Ron (Helen) Mann of Kingston, Ontario. Gerry was predeceased by his dad, Walter, and mom, Dode.
Gerry was born in Winnipeg and grew up in various towns in Northern Ontario. He joined the Imperial Bank of Canada (later CIBC) on July 10, 1950 and enjoyed a long and successful career with the Bank, spending time in Fort William, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Calgary, and Lethbridge and becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers. After retiring from CIBC in 1990 he joined Lomax Group, and enjoyed a second career with Lomax until 2001. His exemplary contribution to the community included serving as a volunteer for the 1988 Olympic games, donating blood on over 115 occasions, being an accredited Little League baseball coach, and serving, at the time of his passing, as the president of the Calgary chapters of both the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (although he was of Irish descent) and the CIBC Pensioners Association. As a gifted mathematician and voracious reader he developed a broad range of interests that made him an avid traveler and sportsman, the latter as an athlete, a coach, and a fan.
He lived life on his own terms and was an inspiration to his family – an influence that will not be forgotten and has set the standard for those who follow.
A Celebration of Gerry’s Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, March 3, 2006 at 1:00 pm with a reception to follow at the Calgary Winter Club.
