Born in Warrenpoint, Co Down Ireland to Winifred Patricia Spencer and Francis Smyth, she emigrated to Canada as a toddler with her parents and her sister Elizabeth. Two siblings followed: Louise Ann (Jim Riddell) and Frank (Cindy Greenbaum). Elaine grew up in Hamilton, attending Cathedral Girls High School, McMaster University, the University of Toronto and Brock University. At U of T, she met the love of her life, Gregory William Hine, son of the late Mavis Rednall and Derek Hine. They married in 1982 and settled down in Oakville. In 1987, their son James Gregory (Andrea Chuey) was born.
Elaine had an illustrious career as an educator. She was a teacher with the Hamilton Board of Education and the Metropolitan Separate School Board before joining the Halton Catholic District School Board where she served as a teacher, consultant, principal and superintendent. She also served as an education officer with the Ministry of Education and a consultant with the Education Quality Assessment Office (EQAO).
A woman of fine taste and broad interests, Elaine and Greg were avid travellers.
In her retirement, she and Greg moved to Calgary where, with James and Andrea, she enjoyed activities including kayaking, paddle boarding, her fitness classes and hiking.
