Elvi Irene Torstensen (nee Franke) passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, April 17, 2026. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Don, as well as her parents, Astrid Franke (nee Asplund) and Nils Harald Franke.
Elvi was a devoted and loving mother to Eric, Karen (Randy), and Sondra (Colin), and a proud grandmother to Kaitlynn, Riley, Miranda (Andrew), Graydon, Colton, Courtney, Isaac, and Lauren. She was also a caring great-grandmother to Noah and Jack.
Elvi was born on May 8, 1933, at the Calgary General Hospital. Her parents had recently moved from Sweden, and they cherished their newborn daughter. As an only child, she grew up surrounded by a close-knit group of girls, many of whom remained dear friends throughout her life. Music played an important role in her life, and through both talent and diligence she became an accomplished violinist, playing in local orchestras for many years. Music also shaped her future in a lasting way, as she first met Don when she was playing violin on stage at the Swedish Vasa. They were married on June 24, 1961, and together created a warm, active and loving home for their three children. Elvi enjoyed family road trips, time at the cabin in Waskesiu, and was always there to support her children and grandchildren in all their endeavours. Elvi and Don loved to host friends and family in their long-term home on Roselawn Crescent, and they would often be found playing games late into the evening.
Elvi graduated from the Calgary General Hospital Registered Nursing Program in 1954, beginning not only a distinguished career in nursing, but also forming lifelong friendships she deeply valued. Elvi pursued specialized training in Philadelphia and Boston in ophthalmology and ENT and later returned to Calgary General Hospital as Head nurse and Clinical Instructor in Ophthalmology. Her nursing career was marked by dedication, leadership and compassion. She served as a Surgical Coordinator for the opening of the Foothills Hospital, became a Surgical Specialties Coordinator and later continued her work as an Ophthalmic nurse with Gimbel Eye Center, Alberta Children's Hospital, and Bow River Eye Center. Her commitment to caring for others continued until her retirement at the remarkable age of 75.
Elvi’s Swedish heritage was important to her. She and Don were lifelong members of the Vasa Lodge; they treasured their trips to the homeland to visit and stayed in touch with relatives throughout the years. Everyone looked forward to Christmas Eve in the Torstensen home which was a traditional Scandinavian celebration.
Beyond motherhood and her professional career, Elvi had a deep love for badminton. She was an active and competitive badminton player in seniors and masters events. She was longstanding member of the Calgary Winter Club and the Glencoe Club, where she developed many friendships through badminton. She took great pride in passing on her love of the game to her children and grandchildren. She also gave back to the sport as a provincial and national-level badminton umpire and as a coach at Rosemont Elementary School, inspiring young players along the way.
Our family will miss the love, the hugs and the unwavering support she gave us. She will be remembered by her extended family and good friends. Sincere gratitude for the care she received at Scenic Grande.
A service to celebrate Elvi’s life will be held at Fosters Garden Chapel, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 3:00 PM.
