Born to Eva and Henry Huebert December 14, 1929, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, she was the youngest of two children. Rene moved to Calgary in the early ‘50’s with then husband, Lorne Johnson, where they had two children, Virginia and Cody. On Dec 11, 1970, Rene married Norm Jones, together they raised a tight knit family of 7 kids.
Rene’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for knitting led to her owning and operating the Chinook Knitting Bag located in the lower mezzanine of Chinook Centre opposite the Bowladrome, later moving to 4th Street SW. Her store was always filled with customers where she taught young and old how to knit and crochet, served up steaming hot coffee and offered humorous doses of advice, earning the endearing nickname “the Knit Wit” which she proudly carried with her to her passing.
After retirement Rene and Norm loved cruising the world’s oceans and spending their winter months in California, and more recently in Victoria, always returning to Calgary to spend Christmas with the family!
Rene was predeceased by her husband (Norm), brother (Len) and daughters Diane Beaudoin and Virginia (Ginny) Collin, and is survived by her children Stephen (Carol), Mark (Debbie), Greg (Brenda), Catherine (Scott), Cody (Fiona); son-in-law John Beaudoin (Diane);Ten grandchildren; Sarah Meilleur, Ashley Jones, Tyler Jones, Aaron Jones, Robynn Jones, Jeff O’Keefe, Kim O’Keefe, Jesse Collin, Dallas Collin, Brett Collin; seven great-grandchildren; as well as other extended family members.
