Erna was a strong woman who worked hard all her life. She was born on August 20, 1923, to her parents Johann and Augusta Klempner in West Prussia (Westpreußen), in what was then Poland. In 1945 Erna’s family was evacuated to Amelinghausen, Germany, which was about a 10 week trek by foot. On September 16, 1950, Erna was wed to Karl Peschel and two years later they immigrated to Canada. They first lived in Kitchener, Ontario, and then in 1959 they made Calgary, Alberta, their home. Erna and Karl shared over 50 happy years of marriage, cherishing their children and in later years their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Erna’s lasting legacy will be one of quiet, simple kindness and generosity. She had the gift of hospitality and took great pride in her beautifully maintained Bridgeland home where everyone enjoyed hours of visiting and sharing in her table laden with delicious German foods she had so lovingly spent the day preparing. Erna had a wonderful gift in growing plants, flowers and vegetable gardens. Erna spent the last few years of her life at the Prince of Peace Harbour where she was well taken care of and lived a comfortable and peaceful life.
Erna was a devoted and loving wife, mother, Oma, sister and Tante. She is predeceased by husband Karl Peschel, her sister Hilda Cordes and her brother Senold Klempner. Erna is survived by her children Ingrid Duncan (Bruce), Richard Peschel (Wanda), her grandchildren Ryan Duncan (Crystal), Jordan and Jeffrey Peschel and her great grandchildren Kayden and Carson Duncan, her sister Selma Arndt (Heinz), her brother Arnold Klempner (Alice) and many nieces and nephews.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Welcome home Erna.
