Born in San Giovanni d'Albi, Catanzaro, Italy on July 29, 1933, Angelo was the youngest of four children. In October 1954, he immigrated to Canada with his family in search of new opportunity and a better life. It was here in Calgary that he met his wife, Maria “Elly”.
Angelo began his career with the City of Calgary and was proud to serve his community. He and Elly raised four children - John, Rosemary, Elsie, and Gino. They created a home that was much more than a place to live; it was a cherished gathering place. Their house on 64th Avenue became a landmark in the neighborhood, instantly recognizable by its vibrant display of geraniums, lovingly maintained greenhouse, and the statue of the Madonna standing proudly out front.
Angelo had a deep love for gardening, especially his tomatoes, and spent countless hours tending to his plants with care and joy. He was happiest with soil on his hands and the sun on his back. Though he never had much, he gave endlessly. There was always a car outside the house, and anyone who stepped through the open door was greeted with warmth, homemade wine, laughter, and unforgettable meals.
He had a rare charisma and one-of-a-kind humor. He embodied hospitality and joy in the most authentic and enduring way. His legacy includes unforgettable parties full of music, good food, and stories that will be remembered forever.
Angelo is survived by his wife Maria “Elly” of 67 years; his children Rosemary (Joe), Elsie (Vando), and Gino (Kelly); his cherished grandchildren Jenna (Sean), Katey, Stephen (Celina), Marc (Jessica), Jon Paul, Danielle, Andrea (Logan), Cara (Josh), and Nicole, who lovingly referred to him as “Nunnu”, and his pride and joy - his great-granddaughters; Emma, Lucy, Giuliana, Livia, Fia, and his soon to be first great-grandson arriving this summer.
He was predeceased by his beloved son John and grandson David, as well as his parents Giovanni and Rosaria, his sisters Teresa and Rosa, and his brother Gennaro.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Evanston Grand Village Care Center for the compassionate care they provided to Angelo over the past year and a half.
Angelo's life was a quiet testament to family, love, generosity and simple joys. His spirit lives on in every garden grown with care, every meal shared in laughter, and the many hearts he touched so freely.
A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Monday, May 26, 2025 at 10:00 a.m.
