Florence (Flo) was born and subsequently grew up in a small council flat in the working-class town of Whittlesey, Peterborough, England. She was the middle child of eight siblings. Flo grew up and lived through a war, working in fields for food and in factories for munitions to support the efforts that have afforded us the freedoms and liberties we all enjoy today.
She married a young Polish soldier in her twenties, and they immediately embarked on a journey across the ocean to Canada, leaving family and friends behind. That adventure eventually landed her here in Calgary where she spent over three quarters of her lifetime. She was always in need of someone to care for whether it be a friend, an acquaintance or even a bowling partner. She bowled in a league at Mountain View Bowling Alley for over 25 years. Flo was a true caregiver, always looking out for children in the neighbourhood; feeding them, protecting them, and even scolding them if needed. She protected us, her children, with the ferocity of an amazing mother right up until she required our help and protection to care for her during her time of need over the past decade.
She will be missed but never forgotten.
As a footnote to this life story, it should be noted that the young Polish soldier, our father Piotr, who convinced her to board that ship to Canada, drove a tank across the fields of Normandy chasing the Nazi’s back to Germany giving us the free world we live in today. A fitting end to The Story of Florence!
Flo is lovingly remembered by her children Valerie, Peter, and Richard (Karen); and grandchildren Rena, Michelle, Haley and Joshua.
Predeceased by her husband Peter; her sisters Brenda, Jean, and Eva; her brothers Bernard, Horace, Dick and Herb; and her father Richard Weston and mother Annie (Nellie) Weston.
A Funeral Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
