

Fred was born on February 21, 1936 in Pincher Creek, AB. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Helene Anne (nee Boychuk) and their son, David Bertram Harshman. Fred is also survived by his sisters, Ella Groves (Tom), Anne Harshman, Margaret McLeod, and Jane Fleming (Wayne). He was predeceased by his parents, Bertram and Myra Harshman, and his most cherished brother, George Edward, in 1960. Fred grew up in the Bridgeland district of Calgary, attended Crescent Height High School, and graduated from Queen’s University in 1958. His career included over ten years with the YMCA of Toronto and Vancouver. He then attended the University of British Columbia and received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Social Work, and also met his future wife and soul mate, Helene. They were married in 1968 and welcomed their son, David, into their family in 1970. Following his graduation from UBC, Fred’s working career included over ten years with mental retardation services in Saskatchewan and with the National Institute on Mental Retardation in Toronto. In 1982, he joined Saskatchewan Mental Health Services as the Director of Rehabilitation Services and in 1990, became Residential Services Manager for the Saskatoon Mental Health Region. Fred was recognized with several awards for his contributions to the field of mental health, including the Michael Smith Award given by the Schizophrenia Society of Canada in 1997. He retired in 1999 and with his wife, Helene, moved to Calgary where they enjoyed a comfortable life together surrounded by loving family.
