Garry was born in London, Ontario and grew up in New Liskeard, a small town in Northern Ontario. He was highly intelligent and personable, with a wicked sense of humour. Garry and his stories were legendary. His early years were a mixture of Boy Scouts and bugle band, with swimming and fishing at Twin Lakes in between.
Garry and his wife, Janice (Jan) met in High School in 1956 when he loaned her some rock and roll records for a booth at the New Liskeard Fall Fair. They were married in 1963 in Waterloo, ON.
In 1968 he graduated from the University of Waterloo with a PhD in Chemical Engineering and was offered a teaching position at the University of Calgary, so a move was in order. It became an adventure as they hopped on a train with two kids (Jill and Lori), a dog, and the only copy of his PhD thesis. Precious as it was, the thesis went everywhere with them, including to all their meals! During his professorship they welcomed two more children (Ian and Carla) and used his sabbaticals to live in Edinburgh, Scotland and explore Europe. Garry took great pride in his family and enjoyed them immensely.
While teaching at the university, Garry was doing research in the field of Multiphase Flow. He wrote some of the earliest computer-based modelling programs for Multiphase Flow in Pipelines and eventually shifted his career to the creation of his company, Neotechnology Consultants Ltd (Neotec). His expertise and ability to teach was in demand and he became one of the few world experts in the field.
Despite declining mobility due to a bone disorder, he and Jan were avid travellers, visiting 44 countries in his lifetime. His later years were spent more quietly, with time divided between Calgary, Maui, and their cherished cabin in the Kootenays, his favourite folk or classical music playing nearby.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 59 years, Jan (nee Marshall); his children: Jill Sherret (Gordon), Lori Connellan, Ian Gregory, and Carla Busto (Robert); his brother Doug Gregory (Janet); and eleven grandchildren: Rebecca, Tayla, Jocelyn, Michael, Luke, Evan, Elise, Mark, Tristan, Danielle and Gabriel.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 2:00 p.m., at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church - 4612 Varsity Dr. NW, Calgary, AB. A link for virtual attendance will be available on the church website.
