1931 - 2014
Gene Wing Toy of Nipawin, SK, loving husband of Mary Toy, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2014 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. He was born in Guangdong, China. Gene is survived by his wife Mary; son Ricky; and daughter Carol. He is also survived by daughter-in-law, Aurea along with a sister and brother in China. Gene wore many hats, even at a young age, from a dishwasher to a bell-hop and a grocery store owner in Calgary. He married his angel, wife Mary in 1964, and moved his family to Saskatchewan in 1972. He enjoyed volunteering and served our community through business and the Rotary Club. He co-owned the restaurant “The Jade Palace” from 1972-1977, and then operated “Gene’s Jewellers” from 1977 until his retirement. Gene was an active member in the Rotary Club with his greatest achievement as an “Honorary Rotarian” member in December 2013. He was a wonderful man who made everyone feel welcome. Chinese New Year’s celebrations were always his favorite, and if his home could hold more people, the whole town would have been invited for dinner. He loved children and would light up whenever they were around. Gene’s enormous personality, and generosity, and love for laughter with a great friendly smile will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Visitation was held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta on Monday, June 16, 2014 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services were held at Foster’s Garden Chapel on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Gene was laid to rest in Queen’s Park Cemetery, Calgary. A Celebration of Gene’s life will be held at the Nipawin Alliance Church, 701 Shultz Road, on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
