George Fredrick Calow

George Calow, beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully at the Agape Hospice in Calgary, Alberta, on June 4th, 2025, at the age of 81 years. George died after an intense 3-month struggle with pancreatic cancer.

George was born on November 20th, 1943 in Ottawa but moved to Calgary at a young enough age that he is considered to be a native Albertan. He attended school in Calgary from grade one through to getting a physics degree from the University of Calgary. George’s work career as a proud and accomplished geophysicist, sometime boss and mentor, spanned 5 decades starting with PanAmerican Petroleum (Amoco) and ending with Nexen.

The most important people to him were his immediate family, his wife Luba and his son and daughter. Additionally, his parents and siblings as well as Luba’s parents and siblings had a large influence on George’s life.

George loved working around the house and garden, planting trees and trying to fix things. He also liked getting involved in his children’s activities. Later in life he loved going on cruises all over the world with Luba. He loved seeing new places and being around people from other countries.

George was loved by everyone who met him and will be sorely missed by all his friends and family.

We want to express our deepest thanks to the medical personnel, the staff and volunteers of The Salvation Army Agape Hospice in Calgary. Their efforts and emotional care greatly helped George’s family and friends and, most importantly, made George’s last days comfortable, safe and peaceful.

George was pre-deceased by Luba Calow, his wife of 53 years and is survived by his son Jeremy (Erin), granddaughter Amelia, and daughter Kimberley (Pierre Turcotte), granddaughter Reya and grandson Lenox, his sister Beverley Nate, brother Robert Calow and brother and sister in-law Fred and Sandy Wanka.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (1566 Northmount Dr NW, Calgary) on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. preceded by an informal viewing at 10:00 a.m. for those who want to personally say goodbye.

After Mass a reception and light lunch will be served in the multi-purpose room.
