George H. B. Stevenson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and aviation pioneer, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the age of 82, surrounded by his immediate family.
George was born and spent his early years in Edson, Alberta, the son of John “Scotty” and Laura Stevenson. The middle child, he was preceded by a sister, Carolyn, and followed by a brother, Donald. The family moved to Calgary in his teenage years where George attended High School. Later he attended SAIT, becoming an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, and after several years working in the Calgary aviation community he established his own companies, first at Calgary International Airport and later moving his operations to Springbank Airport where he grew Rocky Mountain Aircraft into a trusted and respected leader in their field.
George enjoyed lifelong passions for aviation, classic cars, golfing, collecting, and silent auctions. His greatest joy was wheeling and dealing, and he was good at it. This talent proved to have worldwide reach and introduced him to many in the aviation world.
He was probably best known for his distinctive, direct and occasionally outspoken personality. He will also be remembered by many for his great sense of humour, and relentless curiosity. He leaves a legacy of strong and varied memories for those who knew him.
He will be remembered as a great and trusted friend to many, and mentor and sponsor to others, a loving husband to his wife of 60 years, Liane Stevenson, a proud father to his daughters Shannon Stevenson and Sarah Stevenson, and the sons-in-law he acquired, Andrew Cook and Brad Warne, but most of all a proud grandfather to his grandchildren Alexandra Stevenson, Hudson Warne and Fraser Warne.
He lived a full and rich life.
A celebration of his life will be organized at a later date where we can share stories and raise a glass.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to The Hangar Flight Museum (https://thehangarmuseum.ca/donate-now).
