October 13, 1931 – July 19, 2013
It is with deep sadness that the family of Harold Metcalfe announces his quiet departure from this world on Friday, July 19, 2013 at the Agape Hospice in Calgary, Alberta. Harold fought bravely and endured many challenges over the past year as he struggled in his battle against cancer. He will be dearly missed by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years Doris (nee Schmidt), daughter Valerie (Bill) Ellchuk, sons Hal, Barry (Dawn) and Darryl (Laura), his 14 grandchildren and great granddaughter. Harold was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and raised on a farm north of Erikson along with his siblings who survive him: Marjorie, Joan (Ken), Carol, and Ronald (Donna). He was predeceased by his half-brother Hugh Landels. Harold joined the RCMP in May of 1951 whom he represented proudly for 26 years, retiring in Calgary as a Staff Sergeant. His pioneering roots and life in “the Force” instilled in him a fierce work ethic and unfaltering sense of loyalty and responsibility which he passed on to his children and grandchildren, and made him the quiet foundation of his extended family. We all loved him dearly and will cherish our memories of the wonderful times golfing, fishing, dancing, singing, and just “hanging out” with him. “Harry” was proud of his family heritage, and could spend hours discussing British, Scottish and Canadian history, but nothing stirred his soul like the distinct sound of the bagpipes and the soothing taste of a glass of single malt. The family would like to express their gratification and appreciation to all of the Staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic (esp. Unit 57) and the Agape Hospice for their unyielding care and consideration during this journey over the past year. He was not one for large ceremony and as such, his wishes were for a private family gathering upon his passing. He would wish that his broader family and friends simply raise a glass in his memory and think about the good times they shared. Harold will be cremated and his memory will live on at Queens Park Cemetery in Calgary. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic, 1331 – 29 Street NW, Calgary AB T2N 4N2, or to the Agape Hospice, 1302 – 8 Avenue NW, Calgary AB T2P 0R2.
