Hugo George Emanuel Graumann

February 1, 1961April 24, 2011

GRAUMANN, Hugo George Emanuel Hugo passed away suddenly while hiking with friends in the Foothills near Black Diamond, AB on Sunday, April 24, 2011 at the age of 50 years. Hugo was an awesome uncle and brother. He loved nothing more than hanging out with his family, skiing, going to the park and playing rockband. Hugo worked at the University of Calgary for many years designing and setting up physics experiments and sharing his love of science with others. He was a dedicated hiker, enthusiastic downhill skier and an avid reader and collector of science fiction novels. Hugo is lovingly remembered by his brother Peter, sister-in-law Koreen, nephews, Matthew, Jonah, Ethan and niece Emilie. He will also be missed by many family members, good friends, colleagues and students. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 66 – 7 Street N.E., Calgary on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11:00a.m. with lunch to follow. Interment will be at Queen’s Park Cemetery at 2:00p.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6. I knew Hugo over twenty years ago. Hugo laughing as he helped me pull Buddy out from his collapsed dog house roof just seems like yesterday.Peter and family, I am deeply sorry for your loss; my prayers are with you.

It is hard for me to believe that Hugo has left so early. He was a very positive and calming influence in the department of Physics and Astronomy at UofC. I did not know him well, but I always liked talking with him. Just a few weeks ago he put together a wonderful bunch of magnetic demos for my son's elementary school. Because of Hugo, I was definitely one of the coolest moms to help out at science club. Hugo will definitely be missed in the department. I have no idea how we will ever fill his shoes.

I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to those left behind by Hugo's passing away. I met Hugo nearly 20 years ago as an undergraduate student at the U of C and he made an indelible impression on me. Among a group of talented people, Hugo stood out through his technical resourcefulness, understated effectiveness, quiet good nature, and unerring dedication to the students. He quickly earned the friendship and respect of all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.

I want to express my deepest sympathies and my deep admiration for Hugo. Hugo was a great guy and a really positive force in our University community. He had a great influence on many people, especially the students, and his creative energies seemed to know no bounds. Obviously we are all very sad... he will be missed greatly and remembered fondly.

My deepest sympathy for the loss of your brother, uncle and friend. It was a privilege for me to be part of Hugo's University "family" for over 24 years. You can't work with a fellow like Hugo and not miss him immensely now that he's gone. His gentle nature and kind smile made him genuinely one of the good guys. May you all heal with time.
