

James Thomas “Tom” Young, of Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 84, died peacefully the morning of Monday, August 19, 2019 at Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary. Born October 27, 1934, in Drumheller, Alberta, he was the eldest son of the late Charlie Young and late Helen Young and brother of the late David Young and brother of Cathie Lanctot (nee Young).
Tom grew up chasing and breaking wild horses in the Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta. He attended High School in the Crowsnest Pass, and went on to study at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and the Banff School of Fine Arts where he earned a diploma in Business Administration. He married Lorraine Elaine Anhorn in Medicine Hat, Alberta on November 9, 1957.
Tom and Lorraine lived together in Calgary where they saw much success in business and raising a family of two boys, Michael and Dean. Tom started his first business in Calgary in 1962, Universal Fastening Devices Ltd. It saw significant growth through the sixties, seventies, and early eighties until its sale in 1981. In the later years of his career he and Lorraine managed their revenue properties while he worked in the industrial fastener business with Langtry Industries for the balance of his working years until retirement in 1998. Tom was respected and well liked throughout the STAFDA Industry.
Tom was a devoted husband and father, and a Freemason in the Grand Lodge of Alberta. He enjoyed playing and watching hockey and football, curling, downhill skiing and perhaps most of all, golf. Horses and riding was also a favorite pastime, as he was active in the Al Azhar Shrine’s Mounted Patrol for many years during the seventies and eighties.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lorraine Elaine (nee Anhorn) Young; sister Catherine (nee Young) Lanctot and husband Gordon Lanctot of Nelson, BC, along with children, eldest son Michael Shane Young and wife Tina Young of Calgary, AB; and Dean Thomas Young and wife Jennifer Fowler of Toronto, Ontario; three grandchildren, Hannah Marie Young, Charlotte Kathryn Young and Brodie Jackson Young, and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to join in a Celebration of Tom’s Life at the Earl Grey Golf Club, (6540 20 Street SW), on Thursday, September 5, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Refreshments and a light lunch will be served.
