Jack is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Katharine, son Keith (Julie) and daughter Heather (Jeff). He was predeceased by his parents, William and Mabel, and his brother, Lindsay.
Born and raised in Didsbury, Alberta, Jack worked in the family hardware and furniture business. He was involved in many community activities – Boy Scouts, the Chamber of Commerce, hockey officiating, the volunteer fire department, and various church committees.
Jack and Katharine were married in 1962 and moved to Calgary with their young family in 1969. Jack trained as a journeyman appliance technician, then worked at several local companies over his 30-year career, including many years with Castle Appliance and Trail Appliances.
Jack was a steadfast supporter of his children’s many sport and artistic activities. He spent countless hours passing along his love of nature and his many practical skills to his family. Jack was proud that both of his children attended university and went onto careers which they both enjoy.
Jack had many adventures hiking, camping, canoeing, skiing and fishing with family and friends. He was a member of the Canadian Ski Patrol System for 29 years, participating in both Nordic and Alpine activities. A highlight for Jack was being a medical volunteer for the 1988 Winter Olympics.
He also had a life-long love of golf, beginning in his youth. Though he took a break from playing while his children were young, his enthusiasm was reignited during retirement. Jack was a true student of the game, reading, watching and practicing all things golf whenever he could.
Jack was happiest when spending time with family and good friends. Some of his fondest memories were of paddling trips taken with canoe club friends, exploring Alberta and B.C with his family, and of trips to Britain with Katharine. He always looked forward to family gatherings and visits with friends so he could have a “good chat”.
Jack will be remembered for his sense of humour, kindness, curiosity, and devotion to both his family and his faith.
A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held at St David’s United Church, 3303 Capital Hill Crescent NW, Calgary, AB, on Friday August 2, 2024 at 2:00 P.M.
