Leonard Henry Braun
October 23, 1932 – December 23, 2022

IN THE CARE OF
Foster's Garden Chapel Funeral Home & Crematorium
Leonard Henry Braun, 90, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Friday, December 23, 2022. He was the second son, born on October 23, 1932, to Henry Braun and Tina Braun (Kroeker) near Waldheim, SK. Leonard lived in good health and was very active until he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2022.
Leonard’s family experienced many hardships in the early years, establishing a farm in Saskatchewan and later a larger farm straddling the Assiniboine River near Brandon, MB. Something of the farm stayed with Leonard all his days. Plants seemed to love Leonard, and he the plants.
After graduating from high school, Leonard left farm life and moved to Winnipeg, MB, eventually graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Education. It was here in Winnipeg that Leonard met the love of his life, Helen (Duerksen) Braun and married her in 1960. It was also here that his first three children were born, followed by the fourth after the family moved to Calgary in 1968.
Leonard made a tremendous contribution through his decades as a teacher and school administrator in Calgary. Here he taught hundreds of students and dedicated his life to the community. After retiring in 1992, Leonard and Helen spent many years enjoying their travels with their 5th wheel trailer. In retirement, Leonard remained very involved in his church and he treasured his time supporting The Gideons and After Care Ministries.
Leonard had many interests and passions. The flowers he lovingly tended were the envy of the neighborhood wherever he lived. He collected coins, built clocks, and loved making discoveries on the many beaches he combed in his travels. Leonard was a gifted storyteller, sharing tales of farm life that his children and grandchildren will always remember. He was also a faithful letter writer, encouraging many with his written words. Leonard loved the scriptures and was progressing through the Bible for the 34th time and reading until he could no longer do so.
He is survived by his wife Helen. Leonard said that the greatest joy in life was being a father to his children Michele, Doug (Cindy), Rob (Linda), and Don. He treasured his time with his 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John and sister Alice (Dueck).
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hart Ministries supporting the People of Ukraine through Centre Street Church. This is a ministry that was dear to Leonard’s heart and his support was steadfast even into the last days of his illness.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Centre Street Church, Bearspaw Campus (33 Damkar Ct, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at 1:30 pm.
