

Leonard Wesley Avery passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at CareWest Colonel Belcher Residence at the age of 89 years. Len is survived by his wife Marion of 60 years; sister Verl (Smith) and daughters Alice (Cockroft) and Barbara (Wolfe). He is already missed by his 6 grandchildren: David and Brendon Cockroft, Justin, Emily, Hannah and Rowan Wolfe. He is predeceased by his parents Harry and Mazie Avery; brother Rayburn and sister Alice (Cosgrove). During his professional life Len was a member in good standing of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He worked as a geophysicist for Sun Oil Company (Suncor) for 31 years, latterly involved in offshore exploration in the Arctic. During retirement, he logged numerous kilometers with the Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and the Calgary Seniors Outdoor Club. He was also passionate about cross-country skiing and skating. Funeral services will be held at St. David’s United Church, 3303 Capitol Hill Crescent, Calgary, on Thursday, December 27 at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society, 201, 222 – 58 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2S3 or the Veteran’s Food Bank, 1 - 4539 6 St. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 3Z6.
