Luba Calow

She was born on September 25th, 1946 in Judenburg, Austria to her Ukrainian parents Maria and Stefan Olijnyk during the turmoil following WW2. The family immigrated to Canada in 1949 and took up residence on a farm near Shaughnessy, subsequently moving to Calgary in 1955. In Calgary, Luba attended Colonel Walker School and Western Canada High School. After attending secretarial school Luba began working at Pan American Petroleum where she met and married George Calow on August 8th, 1970. She retired from PanAm at the end of 1981 to begin raising a family.

Luba’s life revolved around her family. She loved to invite her extended family and friends to dinners and parties with us. Her interests were cooking, gardening, reading and chatting with her many friends. As well, she helped staff the tea cart at the Tom Baker and assisted the CWL at some funerals and coffee Sundays at St. Luke’s. For many years our vacation was spent at Samowen campground in Idaho where she cooked over an open fire and when her children became older this changed to vacations in Maui or on cruises in Europe or the Caribbean.

We want to deeply thank Ms. Aleisia Arkley and Ms. Deb Sterling-Bauer for the care that Luba received at their hands over the several years of her affliction, becoming family friends that Luba looked forward to seeing. We also thank the staff at Carewest Sarcee for their efforts to always treat their residents as family.

Luba is survived by her husband of 53 years (yesterday!) George; daughter Kimberley (Pierre Turcotte) and granddaughter Reya and grandson Lenox; son Jeremy (Erin) and granddaughter Amelia, and her mother Maria, and her sister Sandy (Fred) Wanka, niece and nephews here in Canada and several cousins in Ukraine. She was predeceased by her father Stefan and her brothers Omelian and Stephen.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (1566 Northmount Dr NW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, August 9th, 2023 to begin at 11:00 a.m. preceded by an informal viewing at 10:00 a.m. for those who want to personally say goodbye. After Mass a reception and light lunch will be served in the multi-purpose room.

Interment will be held at a later date.
