Margaret was born in Hamilton, Ontario. Upon completion of high school and secondary education Margaret developed a keen interest in travel which led her to Europe, travelling independently through numerous countries. Upon returning to Canada, she explored Western Canada, coming to Alberta at the age of 21. Margaret was hired as an Office Assistant at Jasper’s Marmot Ski Hill and her leisure hours were spent hiking, skiing and just enjoying the grandeur of Jasper National Park. It was her favorite National Park within the Rockies.
After three years in Jasper, Margaret was ready for a change, and relocated to Calgary. She worked for the Internal Audit Section at City Hall as a Civic Worker for 27 continuous years. Margaret’s interest in fitness and the outdoors led her to running, and she had found her sport! At that time there were not many women running, but this did not deter Margaret. Her passion for distance running, she completed 42 marathons, in cities around the world, numerous half marathons and shorter distances. She was an active member of the Calgary Roadrunners Club and was given a life membership for her active involvement with the running club. She was selected for membership as a Hall of Fame member of the Calgary Marathon.
Margaret played a large role in bringing the Bonne Belle 10K for Women road race to Calgary in 1979 and guided that race as it transitioned to the Brooks 10K for Women, the forerunner of what is known as, the Calgary Women’s Run, supported by the Calgary Roadrunners Club. Margaret and her friends were also involved in various relay teams, the Jasper to Banff and the Banff to Calgary Relay races. All these sport activities provided lifelong friendships, which are cherished today.
In 1986 Margaret met her husband to be, and married Pat Glover in 1987. They were married for 34 years. During that time, they travelled to running events around the globe, completed distance cycling tours within Canada and the United States, including two cycling tours within Switzerland and New Zealand.
She is survived by her husband, Pat Glover; her sister Geraldine Carleton and niece Lasha Rojenko; stepdaughter Laura and Rob Springer and her three cherished grandsons - Matthew, Adam, and Collin Springer, and a nephew Carleton Lockhart and her niece Jennifer Lockhart.
Margaret was preceded by her parents, Bert, and Alice Carleton and her sister Jane Lockhart.
