Sorry for your family’s loss.  Rie was a lovely soul.  We got to know her through church. She spoke at a veteran’s evening held at the church many years ago, where she shared her stories of being a young girl and living through the war. Her stories of the food shortage touched our hearts and made us thankful for all that we have.  She also helped our daughter on an immigration project, where we learned about her emigration from Holland.  She loved her stamp collection, her garden, and sharing stories of her family.  

So sorry to hear of Mrs. Kruits passing. I call her Mrs Kruit as I always have since meeting her when I was 12 years old when we moved into our new house “2 houses down on Vanstone Cr. In 1967. The things I remember about Mrs Kruit is her quiet and kind ways. I will never forget those fantastic cookies and salted licorice she was always feeding me from the Dutch Bakery that delivered to her door in Calgary. I hope that her and my mother are having a discussion about the good old days in total peace somewhere in heaven where they both deserve to be.

She was a beautiful person inside and out.

In  September 2018 we visited our aunt Riet in Calgary. Liz, Mike, Klaas, Christel en Christina (daughter of Marty) were there too. We had a wonderful afternoon, laughed a lot, shared memoiries and ordered pizza. 
Back in the Netherlands (after a wonderful holiday and a lovely stay with Maggie and Bruce in Nelson), I received a letter from aunt Riet in which she asked me to send those nice dusters from Holland for dusting her house! The oldfashioned ones were the best, she said.  She wrote us several nice letters and I admired that she could manage in her house on her own. Luckily she had Liz and Klaas and their spouses in the neighbourhood, she was very thankful for that.

Tante Riet was my mother's eldest sister and they had a lot of contact over all the years. After my mother passed away in May 2019 tante Riet started to phone me on a regular base and shared that my 'mama' supported her immensely during the first years in Canada, when tante Riet had a hard time adjusting to the new society, far away from family and friends. They wrote hundreds, if not thousands of letters and when telephone contact became easier and cheaper, they called each other at least once a week. After mama's passing away, we also received lots of letters from her in her neat, old-fashioned handwriting and often with loads of stamps, because she knew I collect stamps - see the photo attached. Tante Riet always described the birds and animals in her garden and the influence of the weather and we shared our love for bird watching and she asked me the Dutch names of the Canadian birds. I will miss her phone calls, that always started with "hoe gaat het met je?" without mentioning her name, but I recognized her voice immediately.

When my employer - the dutch airline KLM - decided to fly to Calgary again in 2010, I visited  my aunt for the  first time. Since then I went to her house once or twice a year. We started talking to each other in English but after 2 minutes we switched to Dutch, a language that she still spoke perfectly and almost without accent. During winter time I took pea soup from the Netherlands. About 3 years ago she surprised me with her home made pea soup. She bought the ingredients in the Dutch shop; it was delicious. I cherish the memory of these visits in which she always showed great interest in me and my family; we received at least 2 handwritten letters a year. 
I brought my family to Calgary in February 2014. We were received very hospitably by my aunt, Liz and Klaas and their family (unfortunately I have no other picture of her than this one with Klaas, Christel my wife and 2 daughters)
I regret not having seen her in 2020 because of the coronavirus, but I cherish the memory of a very sweet aunt. I will miss her.
