On Monday, January 4, 2021, we said goodbye to our Mom. Nearing her 90th birthday was a point of pride for her - it spoke to the era she was born in, the challenges she had overcome, and a long dedication to a family she loved.
Maria, or Rie or Riet as she was called by her friends and family, grew up during war time in the Netherlands before meeting her husband John (Jan) and immigrating to Canada with their two young sons in 1955. They landed at Halifax’s Pier 21 and then took a 3-day train ride across Canada to settle in Calgary, Alberta, which has been her home for more than 65 years. Maria held a deep love for nature, especially bird watching, and she dedicated countless hours to writing letters to those she loved and collecting postage stamps from around the world.
Maria is survived by her sister in the Netherlands, To Post-Winkler; her eight children, Klaas (Kristal), Hank (Vikki), Maarten (Anne Marie), Marion (Court), Gina (Garth), Christina (Murray), Margaret (Bruce), and Liz (Mike); and her 13 grandchildren, Amanda, Kaleb (Kaylah), Lindsay, John Michael, Christina, Nicole (Adam, and great-grandson Graham), Melissa (Gavin), Cody (Rola), Troy (Toni), Jenny, Matthew, Erik, and Devon. Maria is predeceased by her husband John, her son Frank Peter, and her siblings Antje, Piet, Dine, Sjoerd, Gre, and Ydo. Maria will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, extended family, and friends.
Our deepest thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Rosedale Hospice for their kindness and care of our Mom in her final weeks.
